Sanctuary on the Fault Line
A network of outdoor dance performances by professional female dancers.
Find performances near you in the listings below.
Sanctuary on the Fault Line was founded and is cared for by dancer Hayley J S Matthews.
Sanctuary on the Fault Line is a call to action for female dancers; a graceful grassroots revolution to put dancers in the centre of a just economic structure. And an opportunity for audiences to reconnect with wild spaces and access the rewilding that dance can give us - creating perspective, reminders that others can lift and ground us, and nudge us back towards essential aspects of being human that we can forget - how to be free, how to have ease, grace, courage, authenticity, strength, adaptability and express ourselves.
This is a network of trust. Led by dancers, performance events will be intelligent, spatially aware events, which will hold life and health with ease and care. We trust that if you come and are touched by the dancing you experience, you will donate to the dancer via the link in her listing if you can. We trust that ‘local authorities’ will find us, condone us and support us in this grassroots re-building of dance.
See you in the wild.

Dear Norwich Neighbours,
I am a dancer and choreographer living nearby. On a regular basis I go out and dance in Lionwood ,sometimes with other dancers and sometimes alone. You may walk your dog there, or pass through to go to work, catch the bus or go to the GP.
Ever since I moved to the area four years ago, Lionwood has been a beautiful home for me to wonder, take a break, get some air, meditate and dance with the trees and other inhabitants.
I would like to invite you to my next promenades. The performance last about 45minutes and it is a guided walk through the woods; an experience through the hornbeams, the fern, the oaks and the holly trees as the stage, the blue jays and squirrels as my orchestra, the sky as my light operator and guests appearances by the wind, rain and dogs. The promenade will be marked by three solos, inspired by the work of Isadora Duncan and the seasonal changes.
The next ones are on the 26th of March and 21st of May. If you would like to come please be in touch with me and if not this time but you would like to stay informed about future presentations - please email me at hello@emmazangs.com
You are welcome to make offerings in return for these dances, tiny or huge are very welcome, these help me continue the work, which has become a central part of my dancing life. Gifts can be made at the dances, or on the project page I describe below.
I hope to welcoming you on my next dance promenade.
The performances are part of a wider project called Sanctuary on the Fault Line, an earth-wide network of other professional women dancers – https://www.ensembledance.org/sanctuariesonthefaultlines

Five reasons watching dance is good for us:
You will be moved. Dancers can communicate emotions, thoughts, and stories with their movement.
You will move. Even if you are not dancing, your neural pathways will work the same way as of the dancer.
You will be happier. Watching make people happier as proved by the Acta Philosophica research.
You will see the world differently. Audience members always tell me how it changes their perspective of the woods after watching the performances.
You will stop for a moment. Watching dance will make you go inward, rest, observe and digest.
